I am busy learning how to use this wonderful app and initially worked with the default 32 bit files. I just started testing Sirilic, which appears to be a game changer for me. The default setting on Sirilic is 16 bits. I like the reduced file sizes but have no idea how much utilty I am losing. I read a nice summary of the differences posted in another thread but it didn’t help me assess the relative merits. Do people think a beginner is fine sticking with 16 bits since I ultimately head that way for post processing in Gimp?
Hello, the default in Siril is 32 bits, I’m not sure why it’s 16 in Sirilic. As soon as you stack two 16 bits images you need 17 to represent the result accurately. But it’s either 16 or 32, that’s why we enabled it by default. That being said, the difference between the stack in 16 or in 32 bits may not be large. If you convert the stack result to 16 bits, it’s even completely useless. I suggest you use the histogram stretching tool of Siril before exporting to 16 bits.
Hi Vincent,
Do you mean that there may not be a noticeable difference in image quality or something else? Could you explain please.
I tend to use the 16 bit mode too because of the amount of space taken by intermediate files. If it was only the stacked version that was 32 bit that would have helped I guess.
Yes that is what I mean. It’s a good idea do to a test with your images to see if you gain something in quality of the result.
Stacking is always done in 32 bits but then saved in 16 bits if preferences request 16 bits.
