For the past few years I’ve been getting up early to shoot the first sunrise of the New Year. Sometimes we get a beautiful sunrise, sometimes not. This year I was invited to a friend’s apartment to shoot from his balcony, for which I am very grateful - it was a rather brisk -29C with high wind, and it was nice to have somewhere to duck in to warm up during shooting. I’m also fortunate that Mother Nature co-operated by providing us with some colour in the sky.
This is from just after I got set up - about 45 minutes before the actual sunrise began. I found it a challenge balancing the colours in the sky with the sodium vapour streetlights, so I thought it might make an excellent playraw.
Thank you for braving the cold and wind to get this atmospheric shot!
I doubt I have “improved” it. In GIMP I have accentuated the steam rising from the chimneys and brightened the snow. I was tempted to reduce the blue of the snow, but as this is a reflection of the sky perhaps it is better left as is.
A bit late, but here’s another version made with rawstudio and the enfuse plugin, which I had forgotten about because of functionality problems these past years.
