I took a look at the .po file for darktable in my language (Norwegian) today. I saw that lots of strings that are translated in the .po file are not translated in the UI. How can that be, and what can be done to rectify it?
I normally use English anyway, but it would be good for those using the translation to see it done consistently. As far as I could see in the .po file (didn’t read all of it) most strings if not all are translated, but when running darktable in Norwegian it is a terrible mess.

In general, if you’d like to see changes, you would “compile” the .po file to a binary darktable.mo file (see gettext docs) and then drop it in the appropriate location. (This is if course done automatically during the entire darktable build and install packaging process.)

I tried to make some changes and then recompile darktable. After that I could see my changes in the UI, but there are still lots and lots of English strings that are translated in the .po file. So there must be somthing blocking them.
I also tried now to install Poedit and compile the .po into .mo. It still only sees some translated strings.

So, I digged a bit deeper into this, and I found there is a .pot file that is needed to get up to speed. Updating the translation with this revealed that only about 35% of current darktable was translated. I am on the case, hoping to complete the translation in time for the 5.6 release, but if I don’t make it, at least 5.8 should be complete in Norwegian.
