Hi all. My first day trying out Darktable. Unfortunately I seem to have hit a problem already. I’m just trying to do initial culling of images by using R to reject or 1 to give a 1 star rating for a second run through. I have a filter set to only show unrated images and when I R or 1 on an image it disappears and the next image is displayed. Problem is, the next image is not selected so I can’t just hit R or 1 again. I have to click on the image first and then I can carry out any action on it.
A supplementary but related question. I’ve imported a parent folder and a few sub folders. In thumbnail view all images are being displayed. But at the foot of the screen I don’t have a traditional filmstrip being shown. Seems to be an indication of years and month bar charts. So when I zoom in to get a candidate image filling the view window, I can’t see what the next image is. How do I change the bottom view to be a normal filmstrip?
Hi David, and welcome to the forum.
What OS are you on, and which version of darktable?
There is no filmstrip in the normal lighttable view. If you press “f” to get full screen view of the selected image, you will get a filmstrip on the bottom (at least I do ).
And I just tried to set a filter for one star ( I start with one star for all images), selecting one image and giving it a “2”. The image disappears, and the next one is auto selected. So seems like something is wrong on your side (maybe an OS thing?) Im on darktable 5.0.1 and Linux Mint.
Hi Hans. Thanks for the speedy response. I’m on Windows 11 with version 5.0.1 of darktable. Definitely doesn’t autoselect the next image after I’ve rated the current one.
If I press F for full screen view I just get the full screen image and nothing else.
If it is to do with Windows, who can I reach out to for help? I’m just running a bog standard version of Windows on a normal laptop and darktable is freshly downloaded and installed today.
I guess you are culling your images in lighttable “filemanager” with zoom set to 1, right ?
Although it’s possible, there’s some drawbacks as you see (because this mode is not for that)…
There’s 2 modes done exactly for what you want : the culling view and the fullscreen. They can be reach with button at the bottom, or with X and F shortcuts.
Here everything should work as you want, and you’ll have extra features like zooming inside the image available too.
Note that in fullscreen, borders and panels are hidden by default (hence the name). To show them, press “B” to show the expander icons at the borders and then you can can expand bottom panel to show the filmstrip…
I am not really addressing your question directly, but since you are new to DT I will share my experience. I shoot hundreds of images in a day when travelling and I do all my rating and culling in the darkroom view. One of the main reasons for this is I do exposure bracketing on all my shots and I want to cull the shots where the highlights are clipped in the raw. The RAW clipping indicator is only available to my knowledge when I am in the darktable view.
BTW, DT is by far my favourite editing softare and worth the steep learning curve.
