Another colorful challenge

Another tough one with the reds peaking.
I am trying to get enough contrast without the reds going over the top.

Gorgeous little bird…I gave it a shot. I used a few color and contrast adjustments, all global. Increased the denoise a touch from the profiled one, lowered the chroma a bit, lowered some of the primaries in the color rgb module. I started the image just past peaking in the AGX module and then just tried using the , well…everything, to try to increase the colors through to the end. Then I used my standard contrast eq, and diffuse and sharpen for the final appearance. I think those last two steps reduced the amount of edge contrast a bit, but I’m happy with how the colors came out at this end.
Thanks for sharing.

These are basic tone mapper edits not far from default

@Christian-B Basecurve module

3D Color film was briefly the Spectral Tone module

DSC07592_02.ARW.lab.xmp (12.5 KB)

And I think the others added contrast so a hint of contrast to the basecurve edit…

Basically tweaked exposure and applied the TM and basic modules…

I didn’t gamut check or fiddle much at all…there could be all kinds of results esp with the gamut controls in @Christian-B modules… you can adjust to a wide range of results… I’ll have to look back on them in the morning…

What an incredibly cute little bird! That was fun, thanks!

Some thoughts:

  • Raised chroma in cc to remove the slight colour cast
  • split denoising into chroma and luma with two modules because the whole image needed a lot of chroma denoise but it would hurt the feathers of the bird. Took some time to finesse the parametric mask of chroma denoise to save the bird (looking foward to AI masking).
  • rgb primaries -blue hue because I like that look
  • desaturated reds in Color EQ to save the beak (probably still too saturaed),
  • second instance if Color EQ to control the green background
  • some fiddeling with AgX.

Same edit, but played some more in AGX with hue preservation and saturation…everything else stays the same. I still have large amounts of color clipping…but it certainly is much more colorful now.

Besides crop and AgX:

  • denoise (profiled) to reduce chroma noise
  • contrast equalizer to denoise further
  • another contrast equalizer to add some pop
  • 2 diffuse or sharpen instances to sharpen
  • local contrast for even more pop.

This is the one. Used to be called Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher.
Common name changed to Black-backed Dwarf-Kingfisher.
A color bomb indeed and it is tiny :kissing_heart:

No idea what over the top red would be for this image so just processed the way I would a normal shot from my camera

Looking great @kofa !! Thank you for your edit.
Looking very natural (not oversaturated or underexposed) and the reflection on the beak looking great with still some texture visible.

Thank you @Terry !
The beak has become more orange-ish with the edit which I was also finding it hard to keep under control.

I’ve attempted to keep clipping (values below 1 / above 255) to a minimum again. But the left leg was an issue. Also my colour zones settings pushed a patch of blue above 255.
I think the beak is prone to being too bright on top, and too saturated on the bottom!

Also, with reverse all, which tames those blue feathers which AgX made brighter than they were before. I’m not reposting the sidecar, the checkbox is the only change.

1st image: with reverse all, 2nd: the version I posted before.
