First up, I am very appreciative that a Mac installation of darktable exists. I’ve been using it for years.
I wonder whether anyone’s got clever ideas for things I can try to stop my darktable from crashing all the time. darktable 3.x was super solid on my M1 Macbook Air, but since I upgraded to darktable 4 (now 4.0.1), it crashes, a lot. Sometimes I’m lucky if it stays open for more than a minute.
At the moment, all I need to do is open it, scroll through some images, open one or two of them, and BAM! it crashes. I’m guessing this might just be me, since I’ve not found others mentioning this. I’ve tried vacuuming my library.db file (709 MB). I’ve used darktable-generate-cache in the cli to cache all my thumbnails. I’ve tried emptying the .cache/darktable folder. I’ve tried various preference settings (eg all of the OpenCL options). Nothing has made it stable.
If anyone’s got ideas (aside from switching to Linux, which is tempting), I’d appreciate hearing them.
I am not a mac user but I have seen DT crash on some windows computers when open CL is activated. For many computers this option works well and for some computers it causes a crash when trying to open an image. Check this setting in the processing preferences, but I defer to advice from Mac users.
Thanks Terry. I appreciate the suggestion. I’ve tried it with “activate OpenCL support” on and off in the Preferences and, unfortunately, the crashes continue.
I’m happy to report that whatever it was in darktable 4.0.1 that was causing the frequent crashes on my Mac is not in 4.2.0. I’ve been using it for most of the day and it’s been super solid.
