I saw the game live. When this play happen, to me it looked like it was a foul but I was surprised the ref just let the play continue to develop. We would not be talking about it if he just stopped the play.
Maybe in the future we could have realtime AI analysis of every camera angle for the VAR.

The Balogun red card was perhaps a bit soft, but it was never “wrong” to have it be a red. I.e. the ref was definitely allowed to give a red card in that situation. It does not matter for a red card whether there was intent, but if a player steps with full weight on an ankle, it could definitely be a red card. Even if it is accidental, because the player is responsible for his actions. If it was intentional, it could be violent conduct and would be a 3 match ban instead of 1.

My comment was tongue in cheek because, yes, it could tell us that Norway is doing less serious fouls than anyone else. But it could also be the case that the refs are letting them off lightly because a ratio of 24.0 fouls/yellow is over 3x higher than England, for example.
But it was more of an observation of Argentina actually, who historically have been considered quite a dirty side, and this table was posted in an article entitled “Are Argentina being treated favourably at the World Cup?” Obviously no one is saying 100% for sure that this is the case, but there are definitely some things going in their favour, such as France facing a whole team of officials from Argentina for their next game, and Messi not being given a red card against Algeria…
