Basic Landscape Photo Exposure Blending using only GIMP and GMIC

Welp, thanks to the generosity and motivation from you guys, I finally did it! I’ve made my first free video tutorial. It does exactly what it says in the title.

Please do all the compulsory things like liking, subscribing and sharing (thanks!) and enjoy! Let me know what you think. =)

just curious … why not start the mask based of the sky exposure?

You could do that, you just have to invert the order of layers.

That was fast! Now I just need 15 minutes of silence and quietness to watch it carefully… something rare at my home

For a learner like me, your first video is excellent. Thorough, clear and at a good pace.
Look forward to more

Thanks! I’m glad the pacing is good, I was concerned about not being clear and easy to follow.

Great tutorial Ian. It was well done, very educational, and interesting. I’m looking forward to seeing many more tutorials from you, and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you very much! I’m very happy you got a lot out of it and that it was OK to follow. More to come!

I finally managed to follow the tutorial from begin to end… really excellent! It gives just the right amount of details on the processing, and the explanations are very clear.

The only issue I had was the background music, which I found a bit distracting… this is probably because the speech is not in my native language, and therefore I have to concentrate more to follow all details.

Also, would you consider to share the pictures used in the tutorials? I think it would allow people to easily do their own experiments and directly compare with your results…

I’m impatiently waiting for the next one!

That’s definitely an idea for the next one, aye. I mean, my work is CC-licensed anyway.

Hi Ian,
Further to my last reply, I have now tried the tutorial and I actually found it easy to follow and the results were not bad. My two photos didn’t quite match and being in too much of a hurry, I went ahead anyway. Some interesting, pleasant results along the way. The two images were of boats in a harbour, the buildings were level but the boats had moved slightly, causing a ghosting, which surprisingly looked good.
But I learnt a lot, (not being too familiar with gimp).
So if this learner found it OK, the tutorial can’t be too bad
Looking forward to many more.

Awesome, glad to hear it worked for you! Feel free to drop some small samples here for us to ooh and aahh over…

I’m actually working on transcribing cc/subtitles right now on this video - hopefully will have something for @LightSweep to use soon!

Wow, thanks a lot! I’m very happy to know that it was easy to follow along to. =) I think my next tutorial will start exploring blending more than two exposures, that’s when things get… interesting…

After years with GIMP I never really got into channels, you explained it all perfectly and simply, pace was perfect and there is nothing wrong with your accent.

The only things I would comment on negatively are the music in the background was aggravating and there was at time a lot of unnecessary mouse movement which I found distracting, though I am still looking forward to more.

Thank you! I think I’ll change the background music for the next one to something more ambient. With regards to the mouse, I think I’ll employ more use of the zooming in and out of select areas, rather than whizzing my mouse around. =)

Thank you for this, very nice indeed. I don’t like HDR and overprocessing in general, and this technique is subtle
