Blooming plum tree

I decided to revisit some photos I took this spring and had a go on this blooming plum tree detail. I feel I overprocessed it a bit, so I’d like to see your edits.

I used the skew slider in sigmoid to add more contrast to the highlights (white flowers). My image is not as bright as I wanted to retain the detail of the flowers. I also used the retouch module to remove a couple of distracting flowers in the background.

Now for something completely different. The simulate line drawing preset in diffuse or sharpen module.

I normally don’t care for strongly stylized images but that is very nice.

I tried to keep it warm and somewhat dreamy:

Yeah, I struggled to keep details in the flowers, so I’ll try lowering the brightness and perhaps add local contrast

My version…

If you are using sigmoid…try not…use filmic or neither…sigmoid fades nicely to white so its really good for sunsets and concert lights and many other situations but it does kill detail in the highlights…you can take steps to try to get it back but you could also be fine without it or using filmic… I don’t have time to play at the moment but maybe I will look at the image later …

Alright, thanks for tips, here’s an updated version:

I pretty much only used local-laplacian instance of Local contrast.

Sometimes the HDR preset in LC is worth a try and then dial it back… Using this with the tone eq, rgb CB and the D or S module is often all I use passing on filmic and sigmoid…other times I will work with them… just depends on the image… I usually start without them to evaluate the image and then decide… but that is just me…

I use primarily Sigmoid and Filmic only if Sigmoid fails for the specific image. It usually happens with images that have bright and saturated sky… which is a similar case to these flowers, but here it is easier to manage.

I actually will use either sigmoid or I use filmic but I like version 5 with the color preservation set to none and then I will use the midtone color and latitude to tweak if I need to …or if sigmoid I will use the ACES preset and then tweak contrast but the good thing is the range of option from no tone mapper to using either of the tonemappers with all their options gives DT an array of options /tools for users…

Yes, Filmic_v5 with preserve chrominance set to “no” is one of my favorite settings. I also use v6 with “max RGB” or “RGB power norm”.

I remember you suggested that when I joined the forum in my first post

Ya I have a preset called v5hard and one called v5safe each with, as the name suggests the different highlight transition setting
