butter up the bokeh of the butterblume?

What technique are you guys using for smoothing the bokeh of an image?

I usually use a masked instance of diffuse or sharpen with the surface blur preset with the blending mode set to geometric mean. This is slightly fiddely to set up but IMHO nets neat results.

Aside from this technical question I think it is a cute photo I am proud of and am interested in your takes on it  .

DT 5.6 with AI mask to select ladybug and flower it is sitting on. I only sharpened the ladybug and flower using the AI mask. I then used a preset I created for bloom in the diffuse or sharpen module that uses harmonic mean (very similar to geometric mean). I selected the AI mask I created for sharpening and inverted the mask to add bloom to the background only. This is also an effective technique to reduce noise (if present) in a blurry background.

I have included the preset here if anyone wants to try it.

hi @mino

Gee, there are hobbyists who go from vintage lens to vintage lens looking to get “just the perfect bokeh.” There are numerous YT videos on the topic.

I think you have the softening techniques in dt down pat. But good bokeh - well, that is more a matter of judgement.

Nice photo, btw. :grinning:

Wonder if you’ve made a new version after this input and what it looks like…
