Can the location of sidecar .xml files be organized into a subfolder?

is there a way to organize the sidecar files to a subfolder? something like
/ (.arw files)
/sidecar (.xmp files)

A more knowledgeable person may provide a different answer, but my understanding is that the xmp files need to be stored in the same folder as the image file it belongs to. If put into a subfolder then the editing program will not see the xmp file.

If you are worried about the look of your files in the file explorer window you can have them sorted by file type and the xmp files will sit at the bottom of the list

No, there is not. Sidecar files go next to the raw files.

Keeping in mind that sidecars are also used to transfer data between applications (e.g between digikam and darktable), having one application store them in a different location from all the others would break things pretty quickly…
