Class A4, of which it appears quite a few have been preserved. One is still operational, according to Wikipedia.
Kinda the UK equivalent of the US Wasatch class, better-known as “Big Boy”: In the UK, the ultimate expression of steam speed, in the US, the ultimate expression of steam power. A single article of each class still operable.

The UP 4014 Big Boy came through Bunkie, Louisiana a few years ago. My daughter and I went down (on that very hot, humid August morning) to check it out while it stopped in town for a few minutes.

Finally* getting to process some “shots of opportunity” taken when my wife and I were in West Virginia in mid-July. Summertime isn’t exactly the right time to shoot landscapes, but we were there so I did what (little) I could.
This is the North Fork Blackwater River just above Douglas Falls, near Thomas, WV. The brown color of the water isn’t mud – It’s naturally occurring tannin in the water. The falls themselves are just downstream. That day they were absolutely ROARING and I didn’t feel safe clambering down a rocky slope with a 20 lb camera bag on my back. With lower water I might have done it, but the potential risk was too great that day. Even the idea of turning an ankle in the rocks wasn’t appealing.
Valley Falls State Park near Fairmont, WV. Nice place – We were the ONLY people there, from what we saw.
The very flood-swollen Middle Fork River at Audra State Park. This was impressive – The bridge was shaking as I stood on it taking this photo. There had been a tremendous rain the night before and I-79 near Buckhannon, WV was closed, with semi trucks barely sticking out of the water. It was bad.

I bought a new laptop in May (?) but within a month I had experienced three hardware-related bugcheck panics. Since it was under warranty I sent it back to Lenovo – and in all fairness to them, they were not hesitant in the slightest. They quickly sent me shipping labels and returned it via overnight shipping. Anyway, I didn’t get too bent out of shape because bad hardware happens every now and then. A little annoying but no complaints.
Anyway, got it back and the next day had another bugcheck. But this time it was software / driver related from all appearances. Rather than fight that battle myself on a new warranted machine, I sent it back again. I got it back about a week ago.
Each time I got it back, it had been wiped and I had to go through the OS setup stuff, install my apps, copy data, yada, yada, yada. The third time, it wouldn’t activate (OS key is in the hardware). So I had to blow it away yet again and set up the OS a fourth time. That time, it went to plan.
So far now, all looks OK (I’ll say very quietly). So here I am with a fast new laptop but mentally treading on eggshells, awaiting something to happen (not because of what it is, but what it was, so to speak). Give me a month or two with no issues and I’ll be happy again. LOL Nature of the beast, I guess.
