Categories Ideas?

So, for anyone perusing the topics, I’m looking for some feedback concerning Categories for the site. Any ideas on what might be some good categories to set up? I don’t want too many to avoid being too cluttered or confusing, but understand that a few categories might help a bit.

Perhaps starting from a high level idea, like hardware, software?

Shooting, Post? (just spitballing ideas here…)

To see the current categories: check here. They are bascially:

  • PIXLS.US (For imported posts from the website ie: comment threads on posts)
  • Meta (Category about this forum and the website itself)
  • Uncategorized
  • Staff (Not normally visible to all users)
  • Lounge (Trust Level 3 and higher users)

Some more brainstorming…

Critique/Criticisms for users to upload images and get feedback?
A showcase category? Maybe make this and C&C sub-categories of “Images”?

  • Feedback (for C&C)
  • Showcase (not quite sold on this)
  • Shooting
  • Processing
  • Tutorials (not sure if this is part of/sub of processing)
  • Off-Topic(?)

At the moment, I’ve added two new categories:

  • Help!
  • Processing

Help!

I’m thinking this category can be useful for troubleshooting issues of all sorts (processing as well as photographing things). I can add sub-categories as needed to this, but I want to approach the categories with a light hand and not make too many early on…

I’m dating myself with this album cover, aren’t I?

Processing

This one is a catch-all for any post-processing topics. Some forums will break this out too much (like sub-categories for each piece of software). This is something I’d like to avoid if possible as it really gets too confusing this way.

I am also considering adding one other category for the act of capturing photographs, lighting, techniques, setups, etc. All the physical things that go into creating a photograph. I’m just not quite sure what to call it just yet. I was originally considering Shooting, but the connotation might be negative. Photographing is another thought as is Capturing. I’m open to any thoughts or feedback about this!

I’d lean towards the Capturing label as it’s more general.

Shooting sounds too rapid for some types of photography - pin holes and camera-less photography for example: Camera-less photography: techniques - Victoria and Albert Museum

I think so too. Maybe Capture or Capturing the Image (though I feel that perhaps the Image might be redundant in this sense).

Wonderful link, btw. This is a wonderfully haunting image:
