Chasing the pigeon...

Looking for specific feedback on the picture. I liked it, but others didn’t like it as much. Am I doing it too much or something? Critical feedback appreciated.

My honest feedback is since you asked for feedback. I find the image too soft because of shutter speed and the focus seems to be the background and not the actual subject.

My recommendation is to consider what you like about the photograph and take more images with that concept in mind.

Here is my edit trying to draw attention to the subject. May I ask which country it is in?

Thanks for sharing.
1.) What did “others” not like?
2.) What do you like about the capture?

3.) My feedback:
I Like the “gritty” look.
But the composition doesnt properly work out for me. The poeple walking from the left and the girl lead my eyes from the top left towards the center and then along the curb but then they miss the pigeons. Also because of the relatively empty space above the pigeons. This leads to unresolved tension and feels unsatisfiying.

Thanks for the feedback @Terry

Yes, focus seems to be a problem with a lot of my pics. I try to use manual focus all the time, so tend to get it wrong sometimes with these point and click moments. I will keep that in mind.

This is from India, btw.

Thanks for this @mino

  1. Just the general “enhancement” through the post, when I showed them the original and the final

  2. The kid chasing the pigeons was my interest in this pic, but since it was momentary, couldn’t risk losing the moment for isolating that.

I think you have managed to put it in words properly, about the pic why it doesn’t work as much. Thanks!

This is better! Monochrome did cross my mind, but I felt that the colors would give it a dreamy look, so continued with it.

I think @popanz increased contrast of the sunlit grass in the background helps the composition, too. It “pushes” my attention dowwards.

It is sometimes difficult to divorce our experience of the moment from the resulting photo. For me at least it often takes multiple weeks or months to simply see a photo for what it is.

That’s refreshing to hear, and honestly great advice. Will keep it in mind!

Well if you were after a dreamy look, I went into the wrong direction.
I prefer B/W on this one. Anyway my attempt on a dreamy version:

I do a lot of manual focusing. I have focus peaking enabled and it is critical to getting good results in my hands. On the Lumix it can be set through Custom Menu > Monitor / Display > Peaking, and toggle it ON.

Autofocus would have easily have selected the girl as the point of focus so that is another option. Manual focus takes time which can be challenging for point and shoot moments.

I thought it might have been India or Sri Lanka. I have travelled to both of these countries in the past.

I cropped it to the main subjects, gave it more global and local contrast, and brightened it overall.
