Color grading: the lonely monk

To color grade this picture and give a sense of warm light, I chose the lazy approach, some dodge & burn + a LUT.
Just curious of what you guys can do

Dang I love the way that shadow comes straight off the roof line!

Hmmm. The image is nice and warm with no edits at all. I did a few minor things, but I tried to keep the “light” close to the original.

I gotta ask, what dark magic is this? How do you get an image this pinsharp front to back at f4, even on a crop sensor?

Used basically only selective editing tools in Rawtherapee apse-improv branch. Testing the sigmoid function and using chromatic adaptation under viewing conditions to warm the image.

I think I prefer the “correct” white balance.

Nothing in the frame is very close basically all at infinity for a 24mm lens.

Converted to PNG with FastStone, made a threshold and it’s inverse masks in the GIMP, edited shadows and highlights separately, merged, then USM’d to taste:

I liked the original edit, but the LUT was not available to me. so here is my attempt to warm the sunshine and keep the ‘natural’ as shot colors of the shade.

Not sure what caused them, but there are a lot of pixelated artefacts. Most notable in the sky, but all over the walls as well.

Yes I noticed those but posted anyway …

… I suspect downsizing 25% with Lanczos2 (sharper) was the problem. No such downsizing artifacts with Mitchell.

Adjusted colour balance and zones, and lightness and chromacity in contrast eq. A few other bits and bobs to try to sharpen, a bit of a crop, and a graduated density filter with a slight yellow hue with a reduction in ev.
