Maybe this is the wrong place for this question but I am trying anyway.
I am working on a project that involves color management (photo editing) on mobile devices. What do you guys know about this?
Accoding to my research these are the facts: according to official androind documentation android can do color management, however, the feature is deactivated by most tablet/smartphone manufacturers, at least Samsung. Maybe it can be switched on in developer mode or so? The second issue is that there are no android apps that can do color management. So in practice although many tablets have excellent screens with large color spaces, those screens show wrong (oversaturated) colors.
However, the ipad pros seem to be more or less color managed. But unfortunately I cannot check this in detail because I have no ipad - is every app color managed? Is the whole system color managed? But, according to my sources, the ipad pros profile is kind of built in and cannot be changed.
Hope there are at least one or two people who know something about this.
Yes, that’s the official documentation that I mentioned. If I understand it correctly it just means that support for several different color spaces such as adobergb or p3 can be switched on by the device manufacturer, but no icc profiles can be used, which means that screens that differ from those few color spaces cannot show colors correctly.
So my response is one of ignorance, but would I be correct in presuming these devices at best are color managed to produce a good sRGB profile as this is the web safe standard?
Actually no, because at least a third of them have excellent screens with large color spaces, that mostly show the colors oversaturated because they are not color managed.
Samsung devices at least have an srgb mode.
