Confused about comments regarding ETTR

I agree

Typically, I reach the blinking and then turn back. Sometime it blink only one time when I start to press the shot button, in this case I reduce again.

This video shows the difference between “Natural live view” OFF and ON (1:08)

I actually did something very similar to the guy in this video for my own tests. What surprised though was that with natural live view ON, my highlights were blown even before the highlight alert started to blink. I took a series of shots, gradually increasing the exp comp until the highlight alert went off. So, in theory, some should have been unclipped and some clipped. But I found that all of them were clipped after importing, even the ones before the highlight alert showed.

But, it was a small test and the clipping occurred on a computer screen turned on, so I need to get outside and do a proper test. Ultimately, if the highlight alert matches actual clipping very closely (i.e. meaning I just need to back off about 1/3 stop when the alert goes off), then I would say natural live view is a good feature and I will use it.

By the way, have you noticed that the highlight alert changes when you half press the shutter? It seems the half-press is the more accurate one, and I’m wondering if it’s when you shoot in a semi-auto mode, because it’s only when you half press that the camera calculates shutter speed or ISO. I should test using full manual mode to see if the live view is consistent with the half-pressed view.

Yes, I don’t know why, but in this case, for safety, I go back 1/3. I have noticed this even when I shoot in manual.
