Custom collection a-la Lightroom

Hello fellow dt users,

Quick question. Is there a way to make custom collections in dt, solely based on user selection? I am thinking about the common task of picking a set of pictures for a book, for example, and save the selection for further editing or perhaps for future purposes.

In Lightroom this is very easy, you simply create a new Collection (which looks like a folder in the interface) and drag and drop the selected pictures into it.

In dt, a possible strategy that comes to my mind is to create a unique hierarchical tag for the collection (e.g. “my collections|summer 2023 book”) and apply it to all selected pictures. Is this the way to go?

Thanks for any comments!

Yes you’ll need some way to allow darktable to uniquely identify those images, and a tag seems a reasonable way to do this. The only real alternative I can think is to move or copy the files to another directory.

That’s the way I do it, markind that whole tag hierarchy as private and disabling the export of private tags on the export module settings.

Thanks, good call about the private tag, I hadn’t thought of that!
