Thanks for the helpful explanation. That works for me. As Todd points out, TIF isn’t as nice as RAW, but it works.
Todd, I often use external editors like Pixelmator Pro to remove distracting background elements with it’s inpainting. It is fast and easy. I could do the same with retouch, but it takes longer, for me and the results aren’t always as nice. I also use Pixelmator to work with layers. Sometimes I also use NIK Color Efex. These are cases in which external editors enhance my workflow.
I am not debating this for sure it is common to move things around but you cannot do this with raw files…the first piece of software you use to edit it will have to send you back or save something that is not raw so the utility of sending it via that route alludes me but clearly you have a use so go for it…
I still don’t see a use case for sending raw files from dt to an external program. Or do the programs mentioned work with raw data?
Keep in mind that when you open a file in dt, do the basic whitebalancing and demosaicing, and then send it to an external program, you are not sending a raw file, dt will (have to) send an image file under the hood. This, even when you do not export the demosaiced version.
Now that I understand that I can internally export RAW to TIFF inside the collection and then use the external editor to send the TIFF file to any external program, I feel sad that I am too stupid to understand how to code a solution that automatically does that inside the External Editors module.
Was any work done on this script recently … I did use it about a month ago just to test that it would work with Affinity photo. At the time all was good. At this point the script is running and I am able to configure it to add Programs but selecting either edit or edit copy just give the error that the file type is not allowed…same error for any program and any file type?? Maybe I have messed up Lua or some thing but I am not sure how to further investigate it…
I figure it was on my end…I was testing some opencl stuff and so I have been playing with my configs…. My build is also pretty new and I just got a large Win11 update last night so a few things to check……
It was my issue… I feel like I used this some time ago and it worked a bit differently …I fiddled a bit and see now how it works…I felt like in the past you could just send your image and the intermediate tiff was made and opened in the external editor and then when you closed that it was saved back in DT but I might be recalling this totally wrong or confusing it with opening a raw in GIMP. I just added a few raw file extensions to the script for use with ON1 and Affinity Photo and then I see the export to collection to pick a file format for export to programs that don’t accept raw files so I think actually it is working I was just trying to use it as I had remembered and not how it is supposed to work…
I don’t think I will be doing any direct export of the raw files as a workflow but it works and could be used if I try any comparative edits in ON1 or Affinity…
