Like a few others I was confronted with a blank unresponsive screen on launching newly installed 5.4.
This solution also worked for me. Found on the github issues discussion page.
BEFORE you install 5.4 ensure this box is ticked in your current version -
preferences - miscellaneous - show splash screen

The issue is not really solved. This is just a work around. The current hypothesis is a race condition.
If 5.4 has already been installed, users may find themselves stuck.
If so, I would imagine that editing the file darktablerc so that… show_splash_screen=FALSE becomes show_splash_screen=TRUE would be a workaround?
darktablerc will typically be found within…
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\darktable
