Darktable 5.6.1 keeps crashing at startup

Hi everyone, I am running darktable 5.6.1-1.1 on a host equipped with 4x Intel Core i5-6600, 32 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 1050 TI under OpenSuse Tumbleweed. The OS is up-to-date.
A recent update replaced dt 5.6.0 with 5.6.1. and now dt keeps crashing on startup. Former versions of dt also crashed after having worked on about 8-10 images in the darkroom module and exporting these into jpg-format, but it was always possible to restart dt, unlock the database and continue working.
Now, the splash screen will appear and dt will completely crash at various points in the startup process. Occasionally, it will show the lighttable, then crash again without any user intervention.
I have tried to use an older version (5.6.0 from a rpm), the current 5.6.1 AppImage and the flatpak version of 5.6.1, all are crashing. The flatpak version will start, however, when no files are in its configuration directory, i.e. when no library.db and data.db are provided.
I have also tried starting dt with the --library option and providing an older library file; it keeps crashing.
I am starting dt in debug mode with the -d all and -d verbose options, but the log files seem to stop at different points, see below.

Can anybody give me a hint where and for what to look in the log files in order to track the error, help me with this issue or maybe direct me to a pertinent forum? Thanks in advance.

So basically, darktable crashes faster/earlier with the latest version…

Have you tried starting darktable with --disable-opencl? (in case the drivers or libraries aren’t up to date) And are you using the binary NVidia drivers (downloaded from the NVidia repository, not from default Tumbleweed repositories)?

Yes, I tried that option, too, it makes no difference. I remember using the Nvidia binaries with OpenSuse 15.6, before switching to Tumbleweed at the end of April this year. I haven’t tried to install them since then as generally everything works fine with the drivers provided by Tumbleweed. But I could give it a try and figure out whether it makes a difference here. Thanks for the hint.

Then something else is wrong. I’m also running tumbleed, and have no crashes with 5.6.0, even after hours of running, and working on 10s of images (raw → edit → export). I haven’t switched to 5.6.1 yet, as I never noticed the slowness reported for 5.6.0.

Do you have issues with other prorams as well?

1.) Please provide a log with -d common
2.) Are you parttaking in playraws and have downloaded XMPs from there? Or used dev versions? There is an issue with dt crashing when XMPs created with -dev-versions have been imported.
3.) Try starting with an empty config-dir (e.g. rename ~/.config/darktable/ to darktable.backup) - same issue?

So - does it crash even if you run it with an empty library, by using darktable --library ":memory:" ?

No, I don’t have issues with other programs; generally, the system runs fine. I mostly work with LibreOffice, KMail, several browsers and Virtualbox.
I was suspecting there might be something wrong with my database or my settings. I am not sure, but I think I might have had issues with crashing after a few images with 5.4.0 already, early this year.
I am considering to change a few settings in my darktablerc and try again but I didn’t find its documentation yet.

@1) Please see output below (445 lines)
@2) I don’t know what playraws is. The XMPs are generally created when importing the images I took myself and are then modfied by dt. I am not aware of using any dev-versions.
@3) I tried that, results:

a) empty ~/.config/darktable:
dt starts, empty lighttable appears, dt goes through the initial assistant and creates several files, e.g. darktablerc, darktable.css, data.db and library.db etc.

b) ~/.config/darktable as created in a), but with subdirectories lua, styles and watermarks added, nothing else changed:
dt crashes

c) ~/.config/darktable as in b), lua subdirectory removed:
dt starts, empty lighttable appears, no assistant

d) back to original ~/.config/darktable, but lua subdirectory removed:
dt starts, shows lighttable with different css and a lot of skulls. But I can access the most recently imported directories and the images are displayed correctly. In the darkroom module, some settings seem to have been changed (e.g. waveform histogram instead of the normal RGB one).

So it seems LUA would be the culprit? Probably one of the scripts? I remember downloading some scripts from Github and find files dating from october and november last year, this roughly coincides with the crashing problem. I’ll try to eliminate these scripts only and then start with the lua subdirectory activated again, will report back.

lua specific logs are available with -d lua. Maybe provide logs as .txt uploaded to the forum or pastebin next time :-).

It will start with an empty ~/.config/darktable directory and also start with the original ~/.config/darktable directory when I leave out the lua subdirectory (see my last post to mino in this thread).

@tuxali_24 Please attach a .txt instead of a very long post. Also, don’t use -verbose unless someone asks for it. It is too much and makes it hard to read and troubleshoot.

Still busy with the lua subdirectory. I can’t identify single scripts that cause the crashes and will be leaving out the complete subdirectory for the time being as my priority now is to work on the photos from our vacation :wink:
