darktable crashes

I use darktable 5.0.0 on Win 11 pro 64bits.
It started crashing after I did the following:

  • renamed C:\Users\AenJ\AppData\Local\darktable to darktable-old-07
  • restarted darktable
  • successfully imported Lightroom Keywords.20250126b.txt
  • imported a folder I have imported many times before. Except that I changed the .dng files in that folder by ordering Lightroom to write metadata and previews into them.
  • importing seems to be alright but when I click on a picture darktable disappears.
  • I have no problem viewing any of the the files in FastStone image viewer for what it’s worth.
  • I have commandline started as darktable -d perf
  • in the AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\darktable directory I find this folder:
    Cached_v5_kernels_for_AMDAcceleratedParallelProcessinggfx803_35840PALHSAIL
  • when importing a different folder darktable appears stable

Please advise how to proceed…

  • I saw that commandline starting with darktable -d all is probably better?
  • is the debug info in that folder?
  • what more information should I provide?

Regards,
Jetze

Please start with the arguments -d common, then reproduce the crash, then upload both the output of the terminal and any generated crashlog.

Do you have a GPU on your system and are you using OpenCL? If yes, try disabling it and do the above again.

Thanks, do have a GPU and do use OpenCl, will take a bit of time and report back!

  • Opened Windows Command Line
  • Went to darktable\bin
  • Started darktable
  • Imported the pictures from the ‘problems’ folder
  • Seems alright till I scroll just one line down… crash

On the terminal I don’t get any feedback after the crash… see .png

In C:\Users\AenJ\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\darktable no new data appeared…

Since darktable 5.0 the default location is: C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Darktable\darktable-log.txt

Right, thumbs up for the help!!!

I have found out there are a couple of .dng’s there being the result of combining .dng’s into a pano. When I exclude those files I have no problem.

The darktable-log.txt might be changed as I opened darktable multiple times through the command line and the last time didn’t have a crash:
darktable-log.txt (933.3 KB)
(think new lines are appended though)

Then those files or their metadata are causing the crash. You might need to share them so someone could look into it.
