darktable to GIMP and return to darktable

I’m using darktable 5.2.0 on Windows 11 und I’ve a problem with ext editor GIMP 3.0.4.

from dt to GIMP as TIF ist no problem but return from GIMP to darktable nothing appears. Is this a known problem?

Are you returning it to darktable as a tif? It should work, but it would be like adding a new image, I think. Maybe tifs are filtered out of your import dialog?

When I move from DT to GIMP I prefer the xcf format. When I edit the xcf in GIMP I then save as a tiff. Then I ask DT to add to library for the folder where the tiff is stored and it will find the new image. I am not aware of anyway to get DT to automatically pick up that an image has been edited in GIMP and to add it to the database. This is not a problem but just how it works.

If your problem is that the exported tiff won’t open in DT then share a file so we can check it out.

The external editor script automates a return trip for a tiff between DT and up to 9 external editors …I don’t use it too much but I have can attest that it works for Affinity Photo …On1 photo and GIMP…

I do the same to make use of nind-denoise, too: exporting to a TIFF32, feed to nind-denoise, then import the denoised TIFF32 back into DT. Of course TIFF16 also works, but I found that highlight reconstruction data doesn’t transfer back to DT using TIFF16.

Be aware of color-related settings such as profile, intent, … The colors can be slightly off upon returning to DT, sometimes hard to detect.

Without knowing exactly how you do it, that’s difficult to say.
