darktable versus old lightroom edit

Trying to get similar editing results for this raw image just with basic DT modules. Still not so clear, sharp, punchy or how to say it. How to get closer ?

my xmp

Please in the future resize and apply some compression to your jpegs that you post here.

ok, excuse me

It seems to me that the dt version lacks only some local contrast to get a match with the lightroom version and some sharpeness overall.
You can try local contrast or diffuse or sharpen modules (i didn’t open your xmp…)

A simple edit using ART:

Here is my uncropped attempt. LR is a bit oversaturated for my liking, but since that is what was wanted I have increased the saturation to bring DT closer to LR.

Got it?

But I have to admit, it’s often hard to achieve results similar to Lightroom’s. Here, I had to use a mask on the dogs, whereas I suspect there was no mask used in Lightroom.

Here is my attempt with ART, using dcp profile, less sharpness and saturation compared to LR version:

I’m inclined to agree with the other @Terry - I find the LR look a little too heavily contrasted and saturated. I tried for a similar look in DT 5.4 with AgX.

Playing with the right-hand Luma sliders in Contrast Equalizer brings back that sharpened look quite well. Lifting them higher than I did and maybe moving the middle ones up too will get you closer to the LR output I think.

I didn’t raise the saturation too hard as I found I was clipping the reds and greens too much. Again, you can use the two middle Chroma sliders in Contrast Equalizer to lift it further.

For my taste, the original jpeg is somehow better, here there is too much shadow recovery in the foreground, even though I understand that the subject would be the man and the dogs

First xmp was an initial edit then I made a duplicate and blended it on the original in softlight blend mode and the second xmp goes from there…

Darktable with AgX. Sorry if I prefer more natural look.

Nevertheless, I tried to approach the LR version

And welcome here Petr, of course! I will not try to improve on your picture. But still love to comment…

I came from LR as well - a year ago now - and I was also curious to compare my results. For two reasons: a) while learning how to use dt it is nice to see that you can do at least as good as… and b) just for curiosity - how am I doing.

So far I haven’t spent much time comparing. Lack of energy/curiosity I guess…

But I do know for sure that since starting to use dt my pictures look different. The improvement in my eyes: a touch softer in clarity, saturation and sharpening. And I spend more time on local adjustments thanks to the masking possibilities. Started to be more aware of handling of colors. And I started using a frame around lots of pictures.

So beyond comparing I would say: have fun and process lots of pictures. I learn most from comments of others about how the envision a picture.

Excuse for me rambling about…

Kind regards, Jetze
