digiKam Settings > Configure Question ???

I am a bit thick sometimes; Please explain in dumbed-down English what this option means:

In Settings > Configure digiKam > Metadata > Behavior is an option “Rescan Files when Files are Modified” ; on my machine, that option is un-ticked/un-checked; what exactly does it do when activated ?

What is not being done by it not being activated ?

Thanks for reading and all help is appreciated.

This is for users who make a lot of external changes. If the modification date changes, only the basic metadata is normally read in again. If the option is active, the image is scanned as if it is still unknown.

Thanks; I do make many changes in other programs so maybe I should activate that option.

One more question before I do:
having this option active will not alter or harm my meticulously created metadata in any way, right ? Thanks.
