Do not find ProPhoto (non lineal) in the list of profiles

Some times I want to make changes in a tiff or create an output tiff that is in ProPhoto.

Standard ProPhoto profiles has a gamma applied (I don’t remember but I think it is around 1.).

But in the list of profiles I can only find ProPhoto lineal

Color are OK, but of course luminosity is much higher when you use it instead the standard profile.

Is there a way to use ProPhoto?

I think you just need to put the profile in /home/username/.config/darktable/color/out, on Linux at least, on Windows it’s a different directory. darktable automatically detects it then. However, dt does not bring a non linear prophoto profile. But I think you can download it for free e.g. form Adobe or so.

Thank you, now I have to find where it is in windows.

It is not in the appllications install dir (it seems to be considered a user configuration).

And there is no color directory under Appdata\local\darktable (the database resides here) or \roaming that use to be the places where user config is saved.

In windows system wide profiles are in c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color.

But it doesn’t seem that darktables looks there, I have many icc profiles there that don’t seem to be listed by darktable.
I have to recheck if one of them is the prophoto profile (filesnames do not exactly match profile names).

Why do you even need the output in non linear Prophoto?
Btw, if you click on the softproof icon (bottom right corner of the edit window in darkroom), the path to the profiles should be shown, at least on Linux this is the case.

For example to process the tiff in PS.

But I was trying just to make some adjustments like focusing using contrast equalizer to a tiff or jpeg that was created using ProPhoto (yes, I know it is crazy to create a jpeg in ProPhoto but people do that things).

Thank you, you are right there it shows the path

In windows there seems to be two, a global path and a user path

c:\users<username>\AppData\darktable\color\out (for user output profiles)
c:\Program Files\darktable\share\darktable\color\out (for system wide profiles, but the directory does not exist by default).

The windows standard system wide profile is not used (at least for output profiles).
Screen profile seems to be correctly detected if you have configured it in windows.

I have not used PS lately so I am not sure if it likes linear Prophoto but… if you want to do further edits you should keep the photo in linear Prophoto. PS should actually be able to work in linear Prophoto.

It is not my edit.
Just showing a forum user some things about focusing in darktable.
He madly uploaded a jpeg in ProPhoto.

I used to use PS and have some tiff saved in ProPhoto and others in AdobeRGB.

Now I almost do everything in C1 (till now) and just focus some of them in PS (well affinity, right now).
Now I am trying to move to darktable to use it without exporting to go outside for editings in most of my photos, from raw to final output.

But it surprised me that you could select many output or input work spaces and a lineal ProPhoto
but not the standard ProPhoto which is more probably met in edited tiffs.

For saving high quality tiffs for sending somebody it seems an apporpiate profile (not a lienal profile) and for printing (in windows darktable does not print). For printing AdobeRGB should be enough anyway.

PS and the likes assume usually a non linear editing space.
You can use what ever you want as long as it is RGB but probably many of the tools do not behave like expected if your profile has no gamma (gamma=1)

Well, a last update.

I have downloaded the ProPhoto profile from chromasoft - ICM Profiles
Adobe does not distribute ProPhoto in their set of profiles.

I have installed it in the color\out profile and could export image as ProPhoto or do tests in screen.

But you can not use it as input profile.

To be able to use it as input profile you have to create a copy in color\in
It seems that input profiles are searched there.
A bit odd to have two copies but not a big problem.
