Does Siril have ambitions to enter the field of scientific research?

I noticed on arXiv that Siril published an article on JOSS. First, congratulations!
As a student major in astrophysics, I find that professional astronomy software is indeed not very user-friendly.
So, I’m curious whether there are any professional astronomers in the Siril development team? Does the team have ambitions to challenge IRAF and DS9 in the future? Is there a possibility that Siril might be integrated into the data processing workflows of professional astronomical telescopes in the future?

Currently, Siril is mainly used for amateur astronomical image processing. The FITS data from professional astronomical telescopes often contain several HDUs and are not just stored as images; they can also be bintables, such as spectra or even 3D datacube. I believe that if Siril could better adapt to reading data from these professional telescopes in the future, more professional astronomers would be willing to use Siril, an open-source and user-friendly software.

We certainly aim for Siril to become one of the tools the professional use, at least for some areas where astrometry and aperture photometry can be useful.
Handling spectral data will be more complicated, as it will require a lot of development and time from the small team. Siril cannot read the data tables yet, but simply printing them in a csv file would be easy, for 2D data at least…
More information about all this will come within a month hopefully.

Thank you for your message. Of course, yes, our ambition is for Siril to be used in scientific work.
This is already the case in some articles I’ve seen, for its ability to calibrate, register and stack images. That’s why I wrote this little paper, to get a DOI.

I’m a scientist. Not exactly an astronomer (I’m a spectroscopist), but I often work with them.
I’ve had professional telescope images containing data such as spectra. For example, images from the THEMIS solar telescope. Siril is able to read them, even if not everything is perfect.
