Dog's first Christmas

So we got a new family member this year, it’s almost Christmas and Santa already brought me my new Sony A7 IV. Rest of the story is already told.
Have fun! This is my first contribution in Play Raw so i’m quite curious to see the results.
My attempt came out of Darktable current master

This is a serious Santa Claus!

Welcome to the forum.

I’m not used to Art, but here is my humble attempt.

That red Santa hat and the shadow side of the dogs head make this an interesting edit.

Thanks for sharing.

@gadolf : That is an interesting edit. Have to pull that into ART to see what you did.

EDIT: I just looked at your sidecar: The Log Tone Mapping is primarily what I’m noticing.

Yeah, it tastes (and results) like filmic, with which I’m more used to. But I couldn’t achieve the overall control I wanted, for lack of experience in Art (made just a couple of edits previously), so the result is very unrealistic. I was looking for something more in your result’s direction.
I also did a few local adjustments and could use the masking feature with relative ease, considering that I didn’t rtfm… But it was fun, a trial and error fun :man_shrugging:

But is it official Santa red…

EDIT Took a try with ART…usually use DT… didn’t try for Santa Red

@priort (and others that do this) : Please add a sidecar to your uploads or give us a valid reason why you do not.

This isn’t the first time that we have to download a full-sized, multi Mb image just to find out that there is no edit info inside the image… Annoying, to say the least.

And, yes, I do use the latest ART development version.

No need for art load JPG as sidecar. same for Dt at least my edits…sorry read more closely…I would think if you were curious enough about the sidecar you would also need to evaluate the JPG instead of the web preview but point taken

I thought this was clear enough:

This isn’t the first, second or third time that your jpgs do not have valid, loadable data inside of them. First time this happens with one of your ART edits, I’ll give you that.

Don’t be lazy, upload the sidecar with your edit(s).

Since you have a list please summarize and I will go back and correct them…if I am just showing a dialogue box or something I have often used just a screen capture…I was certain that all my JPGs had the edits …my apologies I was just trying to keep it simple but obviously I was not

I don’t have a list, I remember this happening at least 2 times earlier. Each of those this was pointed out to you and you either uploaded a sidecar or reuploaded the jpg. I hope you understand that I’m not going to hunt for those or possible others

Apology accepted.

PS: Are you going to upload a sidecar for the above image

Merry Christmas!
Done with darktable 3.9.0+4~gc367c24b5f-dirty .

I will and your comment revealed that sometimes the simplest things get over looked…my DT version is rarely older than a week. Embedded instruction might not be of much use to many users but they could poke around in the sidecar text even with a version mismatch…Thanks for pointing that out I will upload the sidecar shortly when I am at my pc

Having that kind of red in an image, while trying to add some punch, is what bothers me most with digital cameras. Here’s a try with filmulator.

My version with DT 3.8.

Beautiful Puppy, and so photogenic. I dont think I did justice to the image but for my attempt and for other’s critique, here it is.
