DPReview Post: "Lightroom and Darktable: the verdict two years after switching"

American photographer Bob Keefer has written a detailed forum post on DPReview his experience with darktable and DigiKam. I found it interesting to read the perspective of someone who is technically far more proficient than most, but not a master. My guess is that a solid majority of photography free software users fall into this category.

That’s a nice write up, thanks for sharing!

Nice read. I was surprised to learn that Darktable couldn’t handle a 50,000 photo collection but Digikam can. If that is true, I wonder if Darktable can learn from the code base of Digikam on how to better handle a large collection. Or is there any setting in Darktable we can set to cater for a large collection?

There have been changes to darktable recently about tag handling that may solve the issue. For me it’s not clear which version the author refers to.

Must be an older version. I got 80,000+ and Darktable works just fine for me.

Maybe it’s an SSD versus HDD thing?

same guess, older version. I also have 80k+ and am using development version of darktable (no capitol).

Same here, current catalogue with 50000 photos, and in a very old desktop,
and runs alright.
