I find it tremendously hard to capture these creatures, especially with an old manual focus (on the z6iii) 1990 MicroNikkor 105mm f/2.8 AF (non-D). Focus peaking helps a lot. Its nice to see that this old lens still performs well (bought as student in 1990 for my F801, a whole summer’s work)
Processing this image is rather straight forward. Exposure, Capture sharpening, AxG, some fiddling with CBRGB, added some DS sharpening and some clarity. No fancy masking other than a periferal blur and vignette. I also played around with the color harmonizer module, but that still needs some experimenting to learn its power.
Also, I think iso 800 is on the brink of yes/no denoising, so I only use a bit of denoise profiled.
However, the greens and blue/purples seem to let Color Calibration go haywire.
@Popanz I see that you actually switched off the color calibration at first. So is that just taking the cam’s color calibration? In that case, kudo’s for Nikon.
I have something weird.
I tried to replicate @Popanz version, to see what the different modules do. Worked out fine, although not as crisp as his one. lots to learn
Then I tried ‘neural restore denoise @ 50%’ (not raw-denoise), which generates a TIFF. The jpeg of the TIFF looks like this, repeatable.
If I run ‘nr denoise’ on other developed files, they look normal, no black patches. Could anyone try? I don’t have another computer at hand.

I think this means there are negative values in the tiff image.
I assume the tool runs on data further through the pipeline? It could be DorS, or a similar module. Those operations tend to throw dark values quite far further down. Check the waveform in DT, or AgX’s black point picker will also pick -17.46EV (with 0% dynamic range scaling) if there are minimum values in the image.
Looked like a bumble bee to me but again, much smaller than the ones I’m use to seeing. If it’s a fly, then it’s a fly. They’re all just bugs to me. lol
