Facebook at odds with Linux

I stumbled on this. Not sure how much reality there is in it (because I don’t use FaceBook) but the point of the video is that FB (temporary or by mistake or for whatever reason) banned Linux topics.

Take it with a grain of salt and mostly for fun.

Yes, from one angle it’s hilarious – but to me its mostly frightening, because it highlights how powerless we are individually and in small groups when reality get skewed/screwed. This time it may have been a more unfortunate happening, next time it may be consciously at will – seeing the tech oligarchs grouped behind the new truth seeking president make me shiver. (I’ve for a long time thought that Orwell was about one generation too early in naming his novel …)

I am sure tongue in cheek you mean truth evading or perhaps truth creating

I confirm that there was a certain irony there - and also a conscious ambiguity (=should there or not be a comma between “new” and “truth” …)

With the advent of DeepSeek we are being warned of the dangers of censorship presenting a skewed view of the world. Well what has Facebook, X and the other social media platforms from the free world been doing all this time. The tech oligarchs have removed fact checkers because they see that as censorship, but strangely enough certain posts disappear at times when it causes them discomfort.

The world has become a dangerous place for misinformation. At least on this forum I know when I accidently post misinformation more knowledgeable people will correct me in a respectful way.

That may be an under statement

This is the sort of statements flowing from the Trump media machine…

“We’ve talked and dreamed of this scenario for years, but now it’s happening right in front of our eyes,” Kurt Schlichter wrote in TownHall. “It’s beautiful, man. It’s like the jungle exploding in a fireball in ‘Apocalypse Now.’ We love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like victory.”

Now with this announcement the influencers that are loose on SM are now at WH briefings…

“Tuesday was also a day of celebration for many in the conservative media who felt welcome in the White House for press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s first briefing. She made a point of saying she would open up the briefing room to podcasters and media influencers, along with reviewing the status of hundreds of people denied access during the Biden administration.”

Of course, a lot of FB infrastructure is Linux based…

When it comes to statements being true, a one-line definition is all you need:

‘S’ iff p

i.e a statement is true, if and only if, it corresponds with the facts. What we now seem to have as “declarative truth”, i.e. a statement is true if I declare it to be true.

I think there are a number of factors that don’t help:

  1. Interviewers rarely have the time or inclination to challenge dubious statements
  2. Interviewers tend to be from the arts, their acquaintance with critical thinking is limited, as is their numerical understanding
  3. They can easily be overwhelmed by interviewees using the Gish Gallop and similar techniqus.

There are a number of good books on this, I can recommend Peter Oborne’s The Assault on Truth.

I am not a frequent user of Facebook (prefer to live outside their walled garden), so I do not want to defend their actions, but it should be noted that since they are expected to preemptively censor content, without waiting for users to report/flag it, these kind of errors are bound to happen.

We make fun of Facebook because, as a society, we effectively outsourced censorship to them.

I have heard that the reason for the ban was a post that contained a discussion on python training, presumably something to do with scripting and AI.

Absolutely. I’m sick of hearing people say “I spoke my truth.” People think they are entitled to their own “facts”, however ridiculous those “facts” are.

But now, Meta has dropped fact checking for FB and IG, at least in the US. Now, the users are the censors. Couple that with “declarative truth” (see Colin’s comment), and truth is in deep trouble.

It has been for awhile, see the term “alternative facts” coined like 8 years ago.

As expected it was just a filter gone wrong, probably due to Kali Linux or something. Even if Kali is not malware itself, some AV companies classify it as so for whatever reason.

100% agree.

Bryan Lunduke made a couple of videos about the topic. TLDW: Facebook censoring something? Not a surprise. Linux being censored? Neither that. But apparently, it’s a lie.

I’m not going in Facebook, but it comes off as zero surprise if true.

Lunduke is an absolute right wing, nazi, nut job. You should not watch his bullshit.

It is hard these days to distinguish the facts from the noise.
