I’m new to darktable so I may just be missing something-
I would really like film rolls to work like groups - collapsible, easy to select all of them, etc. I was thinking there may be a Lua script or something that could be done during import to create groups from images in the same folder / film roll, but so far I haven’t figured it out.
Has anyone else gone down this path? Are film rolls already effectively groups, and I’m just missing something? Should I try to do something in lua?
Howdy and welcome to the forum. A film roll is eassentially the folder the files are in. Why would you want to group them? They’re already grouped, use the collections module.
I like the group collapsibility primarily- if I have everything showing in the lighttable it would be cool to see one picture from each folder unless I expand it and dig in. Also selecting everything from a folder at once would be nice, because most of my metadata updates will apply to all of it.
Basically I really like how groups work and I’d love it if film rolls could work the same way, even if it means creating groups (automatically, somehow) from film rolls.
Lighttable, right column, top module (marked “select”) allows you to select all, or none, of the images in the current film roll (folder, or filtered folder). There are also options to select all untagged or “untouched” images
Thank you, this is helpful. From here I can select a film roll, group them, and collapse them. Just wish there was a way to collapse a film roll like groups collapse.
I just use the dropdown and work with folders so I really can’t say… then I work with folders at one level or when needed expose all the subfolders… so selecting the base folder in that situation I see all the images from all the subfolders if it select the top level or just a certain one if I select that… perhaps I should review filmrolls but I have never needed them up until now so Iikely I wont change now
