Filmic - adjusting with Levels vs Exposure module

Building on @anon41087856’s thoughts of removing the mid-gray adjustment from filmic and fixing it at 18%. As an idea would it make sense to have a picker tool in Exposure module that would calculate the exposure correction so that the selected area would match 18% gray? My eyes cannot detect the correct correction in one go and I end jumping between Exposure and Filmic and tuning the exposure.

I do that too and actually don’t have any issue with that, rather - it’s less unwieldly that way

I’ve now had a chance to check D7200 mid-gray levels at various ISOs.

100: 6.25%
200: ~8.2%
400-3200: ~10%
6400-12800: ~10.5%
25600: ~9.4%

Sorry, I’d forgotten about the conversation…

Just measured my Z6 with a Kodak gray card, 13%; with a ColorChecker 4th gray patch over from white, 14%

This is from the raw-raw data, before any processing at all…

My observations would approximate what I’ve found discussed elsewhere, that Nikon calibrates their meters to 12%. I can’t find documentation of that, however…

I’ve heard that as well, and I’ve never seen any documentation to that effect either. I’d be interested to know how my Canon is metered…
