Hi there, my camera outputs .fits files but i convert them when starting processing in Siril. But i ran into a problem. The filter type is lost from the converted fits header. Is there a way to make that be included? Alternatively, how do i create a sequence from my raw .fits files without going through the conversion process? Thanks!
Siril doesn’t save keywords it does not know.
Siril doesn’t use filter type, so we discard it.
Also, you don’t need to convert files. Siril reads FITS files.
Ok thanks. How do i load unconverted files into a sequence? I need the filter type for submitting data to a photometry database.
Could you show me your header?
I could add the keyword for next release.
Oh great! Thank you. I’ll upload a fits file but it’ll have to wait till tomorrow as i’m not near the computer today
If it is the keyword FILTER then it is already handled.
I think it is
Yes so it should work if you use the last version of Siril.
Thanks I’ll download latest version and give it a try
There are two things to understand:
- Siril can only load sequences if they follow a simple naming like a ‘basename_001.fit’. If your image contain a date, then a renaming is required.
- The conversion process is often used to do this renaming. But if the original images are FITS files, they should not be converted, only renamed, by this process. If they are actually converted, it’s because you are using windows and haven’t enabled the developer mode, as stated in the console tab probably. You really should do that to accelerate things and not use twice the disk space for the same images.
You can also configure the extension of FITS files used by Siril, by default it’s .fit, you can change to .fits in the preferences, but I think if you rename them with the conversion step it doesn’t matter.
I agree that converting them is a waste of disk space, but it’s a lot easier than renaming loads of files by hand and I usually delete the files created by Siril after i finish processing- there’s loads more along the way! But if i did rename the files, the thing i don’t understand is how do i turn them into a sequence that can be selected from the sequences tab in Siril? That gets created during the conversion tab and every time i do a process (pp, r, bkg etc)
Thanks!
Ah i see- you mean i still run the conversion but it will just create the sequence file without actually converting anything? But i have to enable developer mode for this to work? Yes i am using Windows
Thanks!
One curious thing i have found- before converting with Siril the fits files will open with the ASI fits viewer app which is handy fir previewing the files as it auto stretches them. After conversion to Siril fits files, ASI fits viewer won’t open them- says they’re incorrect format
Probably ASI FITS viewer won’t read 32bits FITS file.
I downloaded latest build and have tested it and FILTER is preserved when converting Fits files. Great! Thanks!
OK great, but I did nothing. The last official release should do the same.
yes you did- you remembered it was fixed in latest version and suggested i update my install
