Flying Stork - Background Separation

There’s two couples of storks building nests in a communication tower nearby, and every so often when I go on a walk I get to see them fly by, sometimes
with huge sticks, or other materials, in their beaks.

Still testing out this teleconverter on the XF 70-300… Sometimes I get good results, other times it’s more challenging, specially when it comes to dealing with CA.

Here is a very swift way of making the background disappear a bit:

Looks very interesting, it definitely works well, even if it changes the mood of the whole photograph.

Unfortunately I don’t have much time for PlayRaws at the moment but this challenge I wanted to take.

Quick and dirty masking and lowering of contrast, saturation, and lightness in the background.

This is a good image to practice on, thanks!

My take on it. An attempt to achieve separation using the “blurs” module.

RawTherapee for the base edit (pp3), Krita mainly for taking care of the background and slightly sharpening the bird.

I see a lot of really darkened and/or desaturated backgrounds and I refrained from doing that, it seems a bit unnatural to me. I did darken and also desaturated the background somewhat, though and also blurred it slightly.

Not sure what to do with the White Balance. This was shot at 08:24 in the morning and I can only guess at how warm the light was.

Looks great. I think I over saturated my background trying to create some separation.

Yeah, me too. It was that weird transitional period between the blue pre-sunrise light and when the first strong rays start shining through. Can’t get a pleasant looking color calibration on that one.

Great photographs! Thanks for sharing.
My attempt, done quickly (and not very accurately) in GIMP.
