That is the mystery to me⌠Helping how?
By doing the opposite of any other similar site until we reach our final goal or die.
Your question should be: is there anything that FossHub doesnât do to help free projects?
Is this still a mystery to you?
Sorry, but⌠yes, it is.
To explain why it is not clear, letâs think for a moment that this is a job interview.
The recruiter asks: âWhy should we hire you?â
Candidate replies: âI am better than all the others, 'cause I do not do any of their mistakes!â
Recruiter is still not convinced: âOk, but how do you think you can help our company?â
Candidate answers: âBy doing the opposite of any other person you can hire, until Iâve either finished my job or I am firedâŚâ
Now Iâm asking you: would you hire this person?
Fair enough.
You guys mentioned ads. As you saw, thereâs a single ad. I think we explained why we use that single ad; to gather some funds.
What do we do with the funds? We use them to support free projects.
How do we support them? By buying bandwidth, equipment/hardware, third-party services that are being used by such projects.
Other projects have different needs, and we also help them financially.
That being said, by simply visiting our site or recommending us you are in fact doing a favor to free projects that need help.
Any specific examples?
Examples:
Bandwidth - from CDNs
Storage - from CDNs
Dedicated Servers - required for different operations such as backup storage
VPS - to serve specific custom services
Third party services: DNS, DDoS, Mail, etc.
Raising funds - project meetings, acquiring software licenses, hardware, books, other IT related, etc.
I mean examples of projects. Which FOSS projects have you already helped?
Well, for several reasons we canât disclose this, but I can show you just an example as it was public:
What we stated there is that we are going to continue supporting qBitorrent despite that ad ban. From a financial perspective, there is no gain for us. Thatâs just a single example. Therefore you should think again if we act as a parasite or not.
This answer makes me even more suspiciousâŚ
- you keep things hidden⌠(the âOâ in "FOSS " is for âOpenâ, remember?)
- your answer is totally misleading⌠You are just mentioning a problem you had with your qBittorrent download page. This doesnât explain what kind of âhelpâ you brought to qBittorrent (which can be downloaded on SourceForge, so doesnât really depend on you).
Ce que lâon conçoit bien sâĂŠnonce clairement,
Et les mots pour le dire arrivent aisĂŠment.
You can keep being suspicious, and you can even hate FossHub, that is a normal feeling.
- No, thatâs another discussion. We explained that on our âAbout Usâ section. Read the âControversyâ and âNot Satisfiedâ points.
- The answer was the best I could find except that you are unable to understand what this means for an open source project. You are also ignorant because if you wouldâve looked better, you would notice that almost all projects that use FossHub also use other services/sites/mirrors. We never tried to impose anyone to use only FossHub, unlike other services that use such a non-disclosure contract and require exclusivity.
The whole point of the post is that you started accusing FossHub of being a parasite site which is so untrue.
The usual tacit these days when one canât defend their position, is to call the other side ignorant. Maybe you can find someone at fosshub that can explain it better.
Based on your comments here, I will be avoiding fosshub in the future.
The usual tacit these days when one canât defend their position is to call the other side misleading because you didnât like his answer.
Before you came in the discussion I pointed out that the projects you carry donât really need you as a download site since they already have one. So, so far, I donât see any project using FossHub. I see projects that have downloads available on FossHub, but nothing tells me they asked for it (and I would be surprised if Gimp or RawTherapee had done so).
So, back to square one, what is the point?
Multiple questions asked.
âprojects you carry donât really need you as a download site since they already have one.â
- I just explained to you why some projects use FossHub although they have other download options available.
âSo, so far, I donât see any project using FossHubâ
- What would you like to see? Large green âDownload from FossHubâ buttons? Banners with FossHub on each project page that use us? We never ever asked people to use our name, logo or do any marketing hype.
âI see projects that have downloads available on FossHub, but nothing tells me they asked for it (and I would be surprised if Gimp or RawTherapee had done so).â
- Again, you are pushing me into a different discussion.
Free (open source) programs such as GIMP use the GNU General Public License (The GNU General Public License v3.0 - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation) is there anything I need to add here? Good, now regarding your question
we added GIMP and RawTherapee upon users request. To make this even more transparent here are the ways we add software titles:
A. User request
B. Publisher request/suggestion
C. We add them
Before we publish them, the software titles must be clean: without software bundles or any other spyware/adware/malware.
Despite the GNU license, whenever we can, we ask permission from the authors (I know this sounds stupid) but if we donât receive any reply we might proceed and list them if we are allowed to do so (again, depending on the license). Usually, a good indicator is if the software is listed on almost any other download site we are good to go.
However, if the authors of certain free software do not allow us to publish their work, we will remove their software immediately, regardless of their license type. We think it is fair to respect such a decision from their side.
If you have a problem with this, you can ask the publishers to send us a removal request, and we will honor it in less than 24 hours.
âSo, back to square one, what is the point?â
- The point is that we are an alternative for the reasons I mentioned numerous times before in this post. Furthermore, your question is hard to answer because you are looking at us from a visitor perspective. If you wouldâve been using our platform (as a developer), you couldâve drawn your own conclusion: good or bad.
I hope this answers your question, despite your accusations, it was posted by the qBittorrent project:
âI am writing this in frustration and protest because these guys, have offered us a lot of help behind the scenes and they were very quick to implement various features for us(e.g., inline GPG signs, update URL, etc). For those who donât remember, we chose them after the SourceForge fiasco with forced adware in the installers. FossHub runs a pretty clean and fast site. They are a hub of good software there. And they do their best not to have intrusive/obstructive ads, ads which help pay for their bandwidth. Nevertheless, FossHub still supports qBittorrent.â
A detour from our rather negative conversation.
1. The blur while âcoolâ isnât flattering. I would rather see a large icon.
2. When I scroll or change tabs, the icons sometimes disappear leaving a white box.
3. When I hover over the gradient, white box or icon, it sometimes flickers.
Thank you for pointing this. It is a long story, but the point is that the new FossHub is coming up soon. This will be fixed.
Good. Funny it took a day to know.
I can continue to show you examples like this, but again, I hope you understand why I donât like this direction.
Ideally, we should be doing more and let our actions speak.
I jumped into this discussion because this isnât the truth: that we are parasites or that we list projects to show ads.
You have to understand that thereâs a lot of frustration especially when there was a lot of work and sacrifices that we all made. Ok, thatâs another discussion too - sorry about this.
Not at all⌠In fact I came to FOSSHUB because I was looking for a place from where people could download my modest production. So I looked all over the site for a link to some Developer/Registration page and couldnât find it⌠Which logically raised the question of how/why the packages got there if the developers couldnât make it happen by themselves.
