GIMP, Painting and Atom Brush Concept

Default painting assets in GIMP currently nudge users toward specific styles without making that influence visible. I’m proposing a reorganization for 3.4 based on the Bristle Atom — treating brushes as geometry, not visual outcomes. Seven overlapping categories become three (Basic, Artistic, Legacy). Texture moves from brush types to dynamics. GIH brushes can already support 3+ dimensions using existing features — no code changes required. Full article with rationale, performance data, and migration path below. Looking for feedback on the framework before I prepare a demonstration mini-set.

My last boss’s rule was, “Don’t tell, show.” I think an example would be really helpful here. I think there is even an open issue to improve the default brush set on GitLab somewhere.

Thanks, Tobias. Well, I am responsible for the revision of resources. The issue is Improve default set of resources (#307) · Issues · GNOME / GIMP · GitLab
My last revision was ready since October 2024, and the main comment about this was:
Improve default set of resources (#307) · Issues · GNOME / GIMP · GitLab

In this comment, it is possible to visit the revision placed in my local repo.

The vision of 2024 is a traditional approach based on the current ways used for the classification, nomenclature naming, and the methods to create the resources.

In the meantime, since the last and final work on this revision, the ideas for improving the experience of brushes, presets, and dynamics have not been interrupted, and this article is my more refined vision on this topic… Why and how to provide it.

My initial approach is to provide the theoretical and methodological framework for providing the concepts, and if someone is interested in knowing or discussing these ideas, I will provide examples, always focused on the discussion progress to avoid wasting time creating examples that people are not capable of understanding the effective advantages.

In this sense, this methodology is a more neutral method to understand the resources for the painting tasks, but it is possible to apply it to other areas with certain limits and adaptations.
