hand toned black and white print look

I was just looking at the pictures here and wondered if I could create a look like a hand toned black and white print

Sorry, I have taken it to extremes!!!
Desaturated to B & W, then selections tinted using colours from the original.

the sidecar probably isn’t that useful here, most of this is done in GIMP.*

edit: depends what you want to try and imitate though, looks like some of his prints have some kind of hand drawn element to them so you can approximate those lazily with G’MIC filters too:

*that’s probably not that useful either lol. Here’s the workflow:

  1. Standard B&W RAW processing in your editor of choice, plenty of contrast.
  2. Search for an appropriate free “old paper” texture on the internet.
  3. Import both to GIMP, photo above texture.
  4. Set photo layer’s blend mode to Multiply.
  5. Adjust texture layer’s tone curve to your liking.
  6. Create a new layer on top of everything, set the blend mode to Soft Light (Other blend modes will work too, experiment to taste).
  7. Pick a colour and paint a shape.
  8. Done

Optionally, experiment with G’MIC Artistic filters.

thanks, I’d been pondering today if there was some way to give the colours a “hand painted on” look, easy in something like Gimp I suppose, pick the colour and overpaint the edges with it, or maybe something like blender with some node based compositing, 2nd copy of the image for the outlines blended with the original

It’s easy enough to do in darktable with one or more masked instances of color balance rgb. You are mostly limited by what you can do with the masking. It’s definitely something I will explore some more.

Here’s a quick proof of concept:

For the red patch, I used mask details threshold to blend it in a bit better.

thanks, I suppose a drawn mask could be used for rougher edges if required

Or drawn + parametric.

yes

That’s an interesting method, especially the B. Roels stuff. Thanks for bringing it on the table. Will definitly do further research.
