Help required, appear to have created multiple lens modules.

I’ve just started using DarkTable with my lumix GX880. At first it seemed the was no lens correction operating (perhaps my ignorance) and I created a duplicate module with it set as ‘on’. Now when I import my RAW images I seem to have 2 or 3 instances of lens correction modules shown on left (as first applied I would understand). I’m a novice with this program at present. Is anything now wrong ? How might I get rid of these apparent surplus modules shown on the attached screenshot please?

I’ve tried deleting with no effect.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Might be easier to see with this edit from the page.

Welcome to pixls!

The list on the left is the history stack, you can’t delete from there. On the right are the actually active modules. You can click the instances button on one of your extra lens corrections modules and delete it. I’d recommend looking into e.g. Bruce Williams basic tutorials for dt to get the hang of the basics.

Hello, Well I seem to have created 3 instances of the lens correction module but have failed to delete. Selecting delete , removes but it instantly reappears (3) when I move to another image. What if anything am I doing wrong here?

Are you copying settings around? How are you deleting those additional instances?
btw.: You don’t actually need to delete theM, you can simply turn them off with the button to the left of the modules name and not bother with them anymore.

This is my problem. I’m not sure how I’ve got these extra instances. I just really want to zero / reset the whole program. I’ve tried (once reinstalling) Darktable but this didn’t seem to clear this confusion for me. Perhaps i should try again. Thanks once more.

In fact a simple uninstall and re install (5.4.0) doesn’t change the situation . Why is this not reset to the 'initial clean install or how do I achieve that?

Have you created automatically applied presets, perhaps? Do you use any styles?

Uninstalling just deletes the software, but not its config or database, and not the ‘sidecar’ files placed next to images, so even if you deleted the config and database, reimporting the photos would restore the history.

Because you have a lot of user data, which would all be lost if a reinstall removed the user data.
If you really want to do that, you’ll have to remove darktable’s “config dir”, with the databases and darktablerc (and some more stuff).

But in your case, you should be able to delete the extra module instances:
in the right panel, in the highest instance of “lens correction”, a right click on the third icon from the right (the two superimposed squares) should give you a menu, with “delete” as one option. Click that to remove the instance

Well, neither styles nor presets should be automatically applied to an edited image. In fact, styles are never automatically applied afaik (unless through a Lua script).

If you want a clean restart: Uninstall darktable, delete the contents of C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\darktable, delete all .xmp-files created for your RAW files and then start over.

I feel like you are misunderstanding something at a fundamental level and would strongly recommend spending a couple of hours with some basic tutorials by e.g. Bruce Williams.

because the edits are saved in the sidecar xmp files. Also you can select the image in the overview and discard the edit stack on the right side

Try clicking on the button on the right side of the “history” tab. This will reset the processing for this image and the additional lens corrections should be gone.

That should work… But it also removes all other editing steps OP may have done, and doesn’t help in understanding what caused the problem and how to solve it.

Ignore the left side history stack.

Focus on the right side modules.

On the right modules, I do see two instances of lens correction but both appear to be turned off. I’d chalk that up to operator error rather than a bug for right now. Delete one of the instances. In the other instance there’s an icon to reset its settings.

Make a duplicate using the dup manager in the left panel… Select original as the option… Did you get those modules without any editing in the new duplicate??? That would suggest that while experimenting you have created auto applied presets. If so you can just delete it or edit to remove the auto apply option

I know. But it helps to identify if it is a manual handling error or something else (an automatically applied style would not go away by resetting the history stack AFAIK).

Hello,

I think there’s evidence of operator error. I jumped in to this program thinking it would be simple to use! I guess I better watch those recommended videos before trying to use seriously. It might be useful if the uninstall had a ‘remove all settings’ option . In order that fumbled editing / configuration of the program might be put to order. Thanks once more.

There is a command line option –configdir “path” here you can specify any path you like… When you add this to the command to run DT it will make fresh copies of “default” config and database files…you can use this to check… I think also you can now do something similar from within preferences ie to have multiple configurations…That I haven’t tested yet but you can try the command line or modify your shortcut when you run DT to get a fresh start….
