How wide of an image can be used with Photometric Color Calibration?

Typically how wide of a field of view, or what focal length of a lens can be used and get the Photometric color calibration to plate solve? Assuming the image isn’t distorted and the stars are round.

The Photometric Color calibration looks like it has a way to set or select star manually. How is this accomplished?
