Introducing Safelight: A Free, Open-Source RAW Editor Built Like an IDE

Okay, the way Safelight is updated is not so cool.

Trying to use Contrast Equalizer module and is it disabled. Apparently because it is not updated. Please don’t break things because people don’t update.

So I get this:

But 2.5.3 is a pre-release and there is no rpm yet.

So the baseline is that I can not use that which worked yesterday, because there is a new version of a module, that I can’t update because i requires a pre-release version of the main program.

That was fast! I just closed v2.5.3 for release and the builds are automated, so it takes a few minutes to finish.

While extension updates still need minimum versions of Safelight to operate properly, installed extensions shouldn’t get disabled automatically regardless of Safelight version, so that’s definitely something I need to look into and fix.

Well, I’m an idiot. I discovered (trying to figure out how to do something else) that I can just select all the rejects, right-click and tell it to delete from disk. So, thanks LOL.

Thanks, 2.5.3 downloaded and installed.

There may be a problem with Contrast Equalizer v. 2.0.0 on Safelight 2.5.3.

When used first time since installing new version, Safelight exits instantly to the folder view. After that all images opens as a grey screen. You can still do edits and the changes can be seen on the thumbnails in Library, but there is no image in Develop. Restarting Safelight I can reset the the image and change all other settings, but not Contrast Equalizer. This is in a fresh install of Safelight with previous conf folder deleted.

Safelight 2.5.3 (both rpm and appimage) on SuSE Tumbleweed.

That’s worse, I’ll fix it. The contrast equalizer was having some rendering issues before , so I “fixed” it and the cause is probably Safelight’s new render slot.

I really thought I’d tested thoroughly, I’m sorry for such a huge bug.

The recent update made the highlight recovery and tone-mappers almost on par with lightroom/darktable. It still struggles pulling that last bit of detail out but its much better then before.

Careful now, don’t want me getting too smug! :laughing:

Thank you very much though, it means alot.

Just downloaded the latest update. Glad to see Contrast Equaliser working just fine. So where do you see this program going? Will you look at other programs and add popular modules or be guided by requests on GitHub? This and RapidRaw are taking my attention from darktable currently as I follow their development. Thanks

Good to hear!

I build based on GitHub issues and put my own requests up as a roadmap. I put bug and feature requests from here up there as well, since my GitHub automation handles priorities and releases for me now.

The project has come a long way, but the direction hasn’t changed: I’m tired of switching between programs because one has a tool I’d rather use for one particular image, and wish I could use the tools I want when I want to while cutting out the stuff I don’t need.

In short, I’ll keep creating new extensions, maybe improve the extensions panel one day, and hope anyone interested will make their own as well (repeated extensions made to taste are welcome too, not just unique extensions).

Downloaded latest version to try out. Imported 11 photos into Library. But thumbnails of DNG files from my old camera (Leica M8) are all black, although in the Develop Module the photo is displayed. Thumbnails settings was Auto, and I have tweaked the Thumbnails settings and re-built but no change. The DNG files from my newer camera (Leica D-Lux8) have good thumbnails. I suppose DNG files have changed over the past 20 years, although other programmes including Windows File Explorer show thumbnails ok.

Thanks for sharing! If you could provide a sample file, I can try and sort it all out. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks, I’ll work on it!

I have encountered an issue with preset importing. Lightroom .xmp files do not work at all, I don’t know if that’s a compatibility issue or what, but none of the settings transfer…

Thanks for sharing! I’ll take a look.

A routine Norton AV start-up scan flagged Safelight in a few places. Please could that be the problem? Maybe I need to uninstall, delete all these, and start again.
Thanks, Matthew

No worries - Chat GPT explained this is because of how Norton looks at archive files. No virus detections!

Your old camera stores its DNGs in a different way than I expected: 8-bit values that a table inside the file expands back to the sensor’s real range, with no JPEG preview embedded to fall back on. The thumbnail decoder was reading those 8-bit values as if they were already expanded, so every pixel came out close to black, while the Develop module uses a different decoder that handles the table properly.
That’s fixed now and will be in the next release.

Thank you very much, interesting.

Now on version 2.6.0 and my DNGs are showing proper thumbnails, thanks again. I am getting started with Developing. I exported my favourite presets from Lightroom 5.7 but when I imported them, there was no tone curve. I could just draw them but a little error makes a big difference. In Lightroom it tells you the x,y values of your points on the curve but Safelight doesn’t. Please is there a way to have a strong contrast and medium contrast tone curve imported? Or a few presets?
In my DNG.lrtemplate preset the tone curve section reads as follows:
ToneCurveName2012 = “Medium Contrast”,
ToneCurvePV2012 = {
0,
0,
32,
22,
64,
56,
128,
128,
192,
196,
255,
255,
},
ToneCurvePV2012Blue = {
0,
0,
255,
255,
},
ToneCurvePV2012Green = {
0,
0,
255,
255,
},
ToneCurvePV2012Red = {

255,
