Is there a colloquial term for "shutter speed#

There are some cameras that have no shutters at all. I own two myself.

How do you start/end exposure, then?

Pinhole cameras — I use a bit of blue-tack (or chewing gum ).

Yep. That would be a mechanical shutter, right?

Not really. It’s just a bit of blue tack (or chewing gum).

Ach, my dear. Isn’t “tack” something mechanical???

Not really. It’s just a little blob of stuff.

Sorry, @Claes; I’m just having a little bit of fun.. Anything that’s used to block, and by definition, ‘shut off’ the light source could technically therefore be called a ‘shutter’. Sometimes, I’ll even use an old sock.

And even your old socks would most probably be mechanical.

Mechanical socks?

Well, they are not electronic, right?
Unless you are related to Marvin, the Paranoid Android?

moving and removing the socks would be a biological shutter, isnt it? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Er… Are you sure his socks are biological?

(Aren’t we lucky that this thread is located in the Lounge?)

If they haven’t been washed for a while, they’re definately more biological than anything else.

i am not talking about socks unwashed since decades , i meant the body movement for the shutter

@rstein Trying to steer this back onto proper course:
I know that it is a trifle bureaucratic, but would something
like “exposure duration” be useful?

Oh, I am going for the formal „exposure time“ and avoid the „shutter speed“ because it is confusing with the film speed and it is a measure of time and not distance over time…

Can I bother some of you to help me with proof reading after I have finished my first draft?

Selbstverständlich.

Yeay! I win! (again, I’m just joking, of course).

I’d be more than happy to help out, @rstein —I think it’s great that you’ve taken the time to write an article such as this, I’d be very interested in reading it regardless. Is it to be published on pixls.us, or for some other project?

It is for pixels.us. And I am struggling a bit, because it is literally decades since I last wrote something longer in English.
I’ll send out my text to the poor test subjects tomorrow, I think. Two parts still need writing.

I’m sure it will be great, @rstein, and I can’t wait to read it — if you ever need any help with anything, just ask (writing is one of the few things in life I’m not too bad at; knowing what I’m actually talking about, however, is a bit of a different story ).

I think I can speak for everyone when I say thanks for taking the time to contribute! :+1:
