Krita did Kickstarter. Gimp would also benefit from it with more developers and reaching certain goals for 3.x+.
If you compare Krita development, Krita had higher velocity and accelerated development of tools and whole API than GIMP.
Kickstarter could help GIMP developers, current and new to gain more acceleration.
