Thank you for these great images to play with. My results, done in GIMP, do not reflect reality!
For both images I first stretched the contrast using Curves, then used my Equal Luminosity Masks Multi plug-in so that I could adjust brightness, contrast and saturation of regions in the independent zones of the plug-in.
