i think in the end i like the original idea of fading to white at the top better, or would certainly tone down the vignette more.
This is a beautiful and challenging image to work with. Here is an attempt to enhance the fog by means of a vertical gradient of chroma and contrast.

I am definitely still missing some skill and knowledge using the diffuse or sharpen module. (I am also missing a powerful enough computer to use it comfortably
