My first try at Darktable

Hi all, I would like to share with you, asking for comments & criticism my first “semi-serious” attempt to develop a raf file with darktable.
I tried to follow the wonderful tutorials coming from @s7habo and from a couple of YT channels (Bruce Williams and Rico Richardson) but I know my workflow has not been good enough (too many adjustments)

I’m just a nooby hobbyist myself and not qualified and able to give reasonable tips.

I can just share my edit and if you like it, you can see in the XMP what i did. If you post your image in “play raw” you could receive some more edits and learn from them.

I think the good news is there is no strict rule how to edit a picture - you give it the look you want.

Here I tried to show the feeling of hot summer day, when all the colours seem to be washed out in the middle of the day.

This is a nice capture, some really nice color contrast going on!

My own interpretation, with 5 min editing.

  1. adjust exposure
  2. WB appears OK to me, so no change
  3. Filmic RGB, set the white point high, as it reflects the impression of a very sunny day. S

    light midtone color boost. Sky stays “natural”
  4. crop : my choice was to have a significant section left for the sand , as I wanted to render the idea of a beach

Nice picture. I looked at your edit history and think you maybe used too many and even redundant modules. I tried to reach about the same result as you did, with only a few modules. Look at the xmp file.

I absolutely agree and this was my biggest concern… but I watched videos after stating the edit and made modifications with modules already used so the workflow has been completely unlinear :frowning:

I will have a look to your xmp file and let you know!
