My son's band playing on a hot, summer morning

My son played with his band at a medium sized town’s “Liberty Day” celebration last weekend. Here is one of my iPhone raw images in unedited form. As usual, it is overexposed. Let’s see what we can do with it.

Weird place with the traffic island there.

I cropped away a lot of it, and I managed to get rid of most of the nasty magenta in the remaining sky, but in doing that, I brought in some green aberration. I don’t think the green is nearly as bad as the magenta was.

I cropped all the way:

I meant to say that it is awkward for the passerby but an interesting part of the photo.

I think this one is really hard, because there is of course some emotion in this picture which I don’t feel. For me it is just a photo. So I treated it for the overall impression. Maybe it would be better to concentrate on the band with your son, just like @cedric did.

By the way, what kind of music do they play?

I agree. I was mainly cropping to get rid of the nasty magenta sky.

The town built this stage (there were three stages) at the end of its main street. The traffic island was there and there was nothing to be done about it.

For this gig, they were focusing on several of my son’s original bluegrass compositions, plus some The Grateful Dead and a smattering of other stuff, such as Alan Jackson.

Wow, you got some blue back into the sky, and some cloud detail. I tried, but I couldn’t do that.

Own compositions sounds always good. I like when people make their own music and not only play the music of others.

Yes. You can hear some of his stuff on Spotify. His name is Ian Cuthbertson. Oddly (to me), there are two Ian Cuthbertsons on Spotify. Here is a link to my son:

Not sure about this one, anyway:

While I like the larger framing in some ways, I think I settled on a closer crop in the end. I tried for something that I would see on the county website about the festival.

My thanks to @popanz and @dqpcoxeas for showing me how to get the sky back from an overblown white mess. Maybe I didn’t do so well with the rest of it, but I learned something.

Thanks for providing this nice “highlights testing image”.

Looking at the highlight internal “blown out” button → reduce clipping threshold until all fits, ~0.96 will do. Also “segmentation” will help immediately to see the nice blue sky.

I was only able to listen to a little (I don’t have a Spotify account) but I very much like what I heard.

Does the band have a name?
