Negative opinions on RT masking

Thx. I’m used to ISVs (Independent Software Vendors)…I work for one.

Just to make sure my previous post isn’t misunderstood: that salmon sky is specific to a particular use of filmic rgb. It is not a general trait of Darktable. Quite the opposite in fact, Darktable is uniquely flexible with regards to its highlight rendering.

Thanks much Andy … I appreciate pretty much your lengthy and elaborative post … Obviously there’s a lot ahead of me what needs to be investigated and explored … I would love to point out one important thing - the longer I am working with that (with processing my photographs) the fewer tools I am using in the end and more simple is my workflow … Also I tend to do more in GIMP (in raster/bitmap editor) Vs RAW processing over the time …

I’ve heard a lot of praise on all mentioned programs … They are certainly all good (DXO, CaptureOne, ACR, Luminar Neo, and so on) … I hope a bit now, that with GIMP 3.x (which supports non-destructive editing) the attention to foss programs will in general increase because now GIMP really shall be treated very seriously among the competition …

cheers, ~dan

I agree with this, especially with filmic. I would urge you to give a try and use sigmoid and the new RGB Primaries. In my opinion it greatly simplifies the process to obtain those colors

Yeah I have Sigmoid as my default, but the truth is I only experiment with darktable these days. 99.99% of my actual processing is done in ART.

I would love to try translating, but I don’t know how to start. Is there a manual somewhere?

hi, @witsu yes, there are some manuals, depending on what you want to translate:
localisation: Translating RawTherapee - RawPedia
rawpedia: Translating RawPedia - RawPedia
hth

Can ART do local adjustments with “normal” selection tools (not the u-point style tech)?

And with ctl scripts…lots of tools that can be masked…

ART has brush, color similarity, area (gradient, polygon) and parametric selection masks. All have various parameters and they can be applied to the image directly or “through” a CTL script that effectively adds another layer of selection logic.

Oh, had no idea. Have to try!
