Old & New musings in an old building in mid UK.

A poor image. It was low down in the crossing of Southwell Cathedral, 3ft off the ground under an arch & difficult to photo.
The story that goes with it: The guide in the cathedral had met an American tourist/visitor. He was explaining some info about the architecture and its age. He went on about how the building used to be a monastry before Henry VIII’s Reformation: ‘‘The monks would have been the literate/educated peoples of this land who would know all earthly knowledge and a communion with their man ‘up there.’ They would know all things, about people who had come before, … and people who would come after in the future! So, when they were building the monastry they included statues & busts of those past and those to be.’’ The guide went on - ‘‘Come with me, & I’ll show you evidence of their knowledge of the future.’’ Whereapon he shone his torch on a hidden bust under the low arch. ‘‘And who do you, as an American person, see a likeness to in the face of this C16th bust?’’ It didn’t take long for the visitor to exclaim: ‘‘That’s remarkable. So they really did know about ‘Leaders’ of the people.’’ Whereapon, other people listening, incuding myself, fell about laughing at his entertaining way of making an old small battered fogotten, hidden, bit of stone an interesting part of a larger story of the building.
What do you think?

It’s great - no one has seen anything like it before!
