How do I find my desktop folders with my photo files? I do not find the desktop an an option to open files from.

Which OS are you using? On Linux you get an option to Open with other application, which you can make sticky.
On a side note:
Something to take into consideration when you want to start opening images in RawTherapee from the OS’s file browser is that RawTherapee has 2 modes.
- A full blown mode (file browser + editor) which you get when starting RawTherapee the normal way.
- A simple(r) mode (just the editor) when you open an image using your OS’s file browser.
You cannot switch to RawTherapee’s file browser once it is started in the simpler mode.
If you are on Windows, you should navigate to C:\Users\<yourname>\Desktop. You can then add this location as a ‘favorite’ location by pressing + under Places:
